The Village @ Holy Blossom Temple: A Meetup for New Parents and Their Babies
The first day my partner went back to work, and I stayed home with our baby, I almost lost it. I felt lonely and isolated. Part of me could barely get off the couch. I’d look at my beautiful daughter, her tiny hands and smile. I’d feel awe and love… alongside exhaustion and overwhelm…this kind of excitement and under stimulation all at the same time.
I don’t have to tell you there are many challenges with the post-partum period. For me, one of the hardest was shifting from parenting as a team to suddenly caretaking alone for 8–12 hours a day. I worried about going out, but staying home felt isolating in a different way. What I really wanted was connection; another adult who understood, who could swap stories, offer perspective, or, honestly, just hold an adult conversation. During this time, connecting with other new parents from the synagogue was one of the things that lifted me out of that fog and made me feel human again.
I knew about the programming already offered for families at the synagogue from Tot Shabbat to Little Blossoms and Family Services, but I felt there was space for something else: a casual, welcoming gathering where parents on leave could connect during the week. I hear this question: Where’s my village? comes up a lot in my conversations with other new parents.
Some of my closest parent friendships have grown through Holy Blossom, and I believe The Village: HBT’s New Parent Circle is another opportunity to deepen those connections and create something meaningful.
