Two thousand years ago, Akavyah ben Mahalalel taught:

“Know from where you come, know where you are going, and know before Whom you are destined to give an account.” (Pirkei Avot 3:1)

Recently, our congregation gathered to celebrate two remarkable milestones in the life of Holy Blossom Temple: our extraordinary 170th anniversary and the launch of The Honourable Irwin Cotler School of Holy Blossom Temple. Together, these moments invited us to reflect on where we come from and where we are going.

For generations, Holy Blossom has adapted to meet the needs of each era while remaining steadfast in its values and purpose. We have built a community rooted in Jewish learning, worship, responsibility, and care for one another and for the world beyond our walls.

Today, we find ourselves in a new chapter. The expectations placed upon Jewish Canadians have evolved dramatically. Our congregants and the larger community now also look to Holy Blossom as a source of leadership, moral clarity, spiritual uplift and stability in an increasingly complex world. Meeting this moment requires more than maintaining what we have built. It requires investing in what comes next.

That is why this year’s Annual Campaign is so important. Your support for the Annual Campaign is a statement of your commitment to a Jewish future, and of your acceptance of personal responsibility for that future. Being generous to the Annual Campaign is the surest way of saying: here is what I stand for. Here is what I believe in, here is the mission I need to see fulfilled.

Membership sustains Holy Blossom. Philanthropy expands and strengthens what is possible.

At a time when antisemitism and security concerns are very real, protecting our congregation remains a top priority, yet security alone cannot, and does not, define us.

The launch of The Honourable Irwin Cotler School reminds us that raising the next generation of knowledgeable, confident, and engaged Jews is among the most important responses we can offer to the challenges of our time. Education is a cornerstone of our mission, and one of our greatest sources of hope.

Every day, Holy Blossom serves as a home for prayer, learning, celebration, comfort, and community for hundreds of people. Our ability to welcome, support, and inspire depends on the strength of the foundation beneath it.
