Advocacy @HBT: A Multi-Faith Shabbat of Advocacy
Advocacy @HBT: A Multi-Faith Shabbat of Advocacy
The week of February 5, 2025
This last Shabbat, the Holy Blossom Temple Advocacy Committee was honoured to host more than 40 of our inter-faith partners for a Shabbat meal in our Mishkan. Attending were clergy from across many local churches, several Muslim allies, our friends from CIJA, the good people of Interfaith Bridge, and other new contacts who want to help address the issue of antisemitism in Canada.
As we ate, people shared stories and experiences of the shared faith traditions that brought us together that evening. Together we heard from a representative of JEFA, the Jewish Educators and Families Association, about the extreme antisemitism that some Jewish students are experiencing in the TDSB. At times there were audible gasps, as many of our most well-intentioned neighbours don’t know how bad it’s become.
Reverend Dayle Barrett of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church spoke about the upcoming Interfaith Mission to Israel in May and his excitement to see Israel with members of our community. We ended with Rabbi Kaye and Cantor Rosen leading everyone in a prayer for hope, and a world rebuilt on love.
This sort of evening, where we invited friends and allies for a good meal and honest conversation, is an essential tool in the advocacy toolbox. If you would like to activate your own network and organize a similar gathering, our team is happy to talk with you. Email Rabbi Kaye at [email protected] and he’ll connect you.
