Avra Rosen, Immediate Past President
I am a fifth-generation Canadian Jew on my father’s side. I was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, at a time when it was the largest Jewish community in Canada. I attended a conservative synagogue in Montreal where girls could not participate in the worship services. I joined Holy Blossom Temple in Canada in 1986. I have been a member ever since.
I am an alumnus of the Wexner Foundation (class of 2000), having been nominated by Holy Blossom in 1998 after leading the congregation in various capacities. I was on the Board of Directors at Holy Blossom Temple for two stints, firstly from about 1995 to 2005, when I chaired family programming, membership, was on the Assistant Rabbinic search committee that interviewed and hired Rabbi Yael Splansky, our current Senior Rabbi, and was an officer for several years, including serving as Treasurer of the congregation. I subsequently volunteered at UJA for several years, serving as co-chair of the Lawyers Division and of Major Gifts. In my second stint volunteering at Holy Blossom, I became a Gabbai in 2011, re-joined the Board of Directors in 2012, where I served as chair of the Department of Administration, and then Vice-President of Administration, chairing many committees before becoming President in November 2019, throughout the entire COVID pandemic. I completed my 3-year term as President in December 2022 and I look forward to supporting my successors in the years to come, as well as sitting on the current Board as Immediate Past President, the Nominating Committee and the Holy Blossom Temple Foundation Board. I was also elected to the URJ North American Board in May 2022 as a Trustee for a 4-year term.
By day I am a family law lawyer, mediator and arbitrator, and have an all-female law firm of 8 lawyers with my partner, Susan Sack, also a long-time member of Holy Blossom. My husband, Mark Goodman, a retired lawyer is presently a PhD student in Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Gratz College in Philadelphia and teaches weekly classes at Holy Blossom for the Women of Holy Blossom and Talmud study. We have two daughters who grew up at Holy Blossom, Sarah (now married to Alex) and Hannah. In my spare time, you can find me walking our bernadoodle Messi, cooking, reading and travelling, including to Israel when possible.
