Sunday Book Club: April 27, 2014
The next Book Club date is April 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
The book we will be discussing is Crossing Cairo; a Jewish Woman’s Encounter With Egypt by Ruth H. Sohn.
Rabbi Ruth Sohn, her husband, Reuven and her two sons embark for Egypt for six months, not for vacation, but for a sabbatical. Her husband is a rabbi also and an academic in the joint fields of Judaism and Islam. After 9/11 he was called upon, more and more as someone who could make connections between these two worlds.
Apprehensive as she was, Ruth Sohn agreed to go to Cairo, even though she was advised not to share her real identity. This book offers a fascinating look at the many faces of Cairo and Egypt through the eyes of a female, a scholar and a rabbi. It covers such experiences as learning the language, meeting the Jews of Cairo, discovering Cairo’s history and politics and learning about women and their roles.
This is a book that opens doors to much discussion.
