From farm to tent to HBT kitchen to our community supported programs…
By Jordanna Lipson.
June 4th marked the opening of our 3rd season of Holy Sprouts, a CSA – Community Supported Agriculture in partnership with Shoresh. You may have noticed our big white tents set up on Tuesdays, in front of the main sanctuary, filled with incredible produce brought in directly from Highmark Farms. Zach, our farmer and his brother Lucas, help run their family farm which supplies many local restaurants and markets such as Wychwood Barns. Each week they help our CSA members choose their share of veggies as well as fresh farm eggs, organic coffee, maple syrup and more. There’s always lots of discussion around the tables about the wonderful things we did with last week’s bounty – as well as the new recipes we promise to report back on next Tuesday.
A wonderful part of participating in the program has been our Tzedakah component – For the past two seasons we have donated all unclaimed produce to Wychwood Open Door’s soup kitchen. This year marks the beginning of a new tradition – “Cooking with Holy Sprouts”. On Wednesday mornings a group of eager volunteers prep all the donated produce for our Holy Sprouts Food Pantry.
This pantry will then be available throughout the year to be used by our own Bikur Cholim, Seniors’ Mornings and Out of the Cold programs.
Last Wednesday was our first session in the kitchen. What fun we had, chopping and dicing as we chatted about our latest recipes gone wrong or right! In a short time we were able to put 4 large containers of delicious organic veggie stock in the freezer along with vacuum sealed bags of fresh asparagus, mushrooms, carrots, spinach, and parsnips….can’t wait to see what we will create next week.
Why not join the fun – become a member of Holy Sprouts and indulge yourself in local, organic, fresh from the farm veggies each week while helping to nourish our Holy Blossom Community – for more information click on www.shoresh.ca/CSA.
