Mark S. Anshan, President’s Council Representative
I am a third generation member of Holy Blossom Temple. My mother and her twin sister were confirmed at Temple and their confirmation picture is near the confirmation photos of my sister’s and mine together with our sons, Micah and Adam. My parents were married at Temple, officiated by Rabbi Abraham Feinberg. My father was an active member of the Social Action committee and Brotherhood, and my mother was a member of the then Sisterhood, now Women of Holy Blossom.
Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut, Heinz Warschauer and Gordy Wolfe had a significant influence on me in my early years growing up at Temple. I was active in the youth group and was NELFTY President, First Vice-President of NFTY and the first Canadian President of NFTY in 1970. I served in many roles at Temple including chair of Social Action, Israel, departments of Membership, Education and Finance, Financial Secretary, Vice-President and President. I chaired the Strategic Plan committee that created the strategic plan in 2004. I served as President of Holy Blossom Temple 2010-2012 and currently serve as a member of the Project Renewal Steering Committee.
In the Reform movement, I served as Vice-Chair of the URJ, Trustee and Chair of the Commission on Lifelong Jewish Learning, President of ARZA Canada and Chair of ARZENU. Most recently I was a member of the Jewish Agency for Israel Board of Governors and the Executive Council and Budget Chair of the World Zionist Organization. Currently, I am on the board of the Canadian Friends of WUPJ. As a founder of Camp George, I continue to serve on the corporate Board of Directors and completed my term as Council chair in August 2022.
I am a semi retired lawyer (called to the Ontario Bar in 1984) and continue to provide legal advice to several not for profit organizations. Prior to becoming a lawyer, I was a foreign service officer with the then Canadian Department of External Affairs (now Global Affairs Canada), having served at the Canadian Mission to the United Nations (New York) and the Canadian Embassy at Stockholm, Sweden and various positions at headquarters.
