It’ll be Lag BaOmer here, but already Shabbat in Minsk. Rabbi Yael Splansky will give the sermon, with the help of a translator. Temple President Avra Rosen will have an Aliyah to the Torah. Rabbi Grisha Abramovich is the head rabbi of the Religious Union for Progressive Judaism in Belarus. A native of Minsk, he started his Jewish journey 18 years ago as a member of the youth group of the Reform congregation Simcha, today’s largest Jewish religious organization in Belarus. Rabbi Grisha Abramovich received his rabbinical ordination at Leo Back College in London and now oversees Jewish life in nine cities across Belarus. In 2005 Rabbi Abramovich became a co-founder of the Minsk Cantorial Festival. Since 2007 he is active in interfaith dialogue. Since 2012 he writes for the Narodnaya Gazeta government newspaper. He and his wife, Irina, who is an educator at the STEP project, have three children.
