SUMMARY:Dorot Presents: Artist Coffee and Chat with Janet Read
DESCRIPTION:Dorot Presents: Artist Coffee and Chat with Janet Read\nWednesday\,February 4\, 11:00 am \nJoin your fellow Dorot friends as we gather with our current Artist-in-Residence\, Janet Read\, who will discuss her ongoing exhibit\, “Mute Eloquence of Light: Arctic Works.”\nIt is on display in our Lower Level Gallery through March 4. Afterwards\, we will have the opportunity to enjoy an informal cup of coffee together with the artist upstairs at Holy Grounds Cafe. \nThis event is free (outside of the cost of your cup of coffee)\, but please register HERE so that we know to expect you! \nExhibit curated by: Elizabeth Greisman.\nExplore Janet’s website HERE. https://www.janet-read.com/ \nThis exhibit is sponsored by the Yosef Wosk Family Foundation in loving memory of Essie Arnold\, a longtime member and volunteer of Holy Blossom Temple.\nThe Dorot program is generously sponsored by a gift from the Estate of Saundra and Henry Sherman. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION:\nMute Eloquence of Light: Arctic works\, by artist Janet Read consists of abstract paintings on linen and panels in oil and acrylic and hybrid drawings/paintings on duralar. These works spring from travels in the high arctic in 2018\, 2023\, and 2025. Improvisation and spontaneous abstract mark making visualize the processes of wind and water relating her experiences of the high arctic in Canada and the Greenlandic west coast. Current works extend earlier themes initiated by residencies in Newfoundland and western Ireland. Abstraction conveys an emotional and poetic response to the environment. It is mediated imaginative experience\, re-created as visual works. What do you see? What do you feel? Are you moved to action? \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nJanet Read B.A.(Hon) Dip. C.S. M.A.\, is a painter\, musician\, poet\, and music educator\, whose childhood was spent near Lake Simcoe. Read seeks the water’s edge as inspiration and solace. Her roots go back to the Ottawa Valley Irish\, Belfast\, and County Wexford in Ireland: explaining a fondness for fiddle music\, poetry\, and the sea. Graduate philosophy and education at the University of Toronto\, plus art studies at York and OCADU inform her practice of large-scale paintings\, book works\, and works on duralar. Exhibitions occurred in commercial and public galleries\, including the Robert McLaughlin\, Varley\, Niagara Pumphouse\, and Art Gallery of Peterborough. Works are collected in hospital\, public and private collections\, including RVH in Barrie\, Town of Markham\, Whitby Station Gallery\, Art Gallery of Northumberland and the Royal Bank. Art teaching experience includes residential retreats Visualizing the Psalms and Material Prayer with the Sisters of St. John the Divine in North York\, On.

SUMMARY:Heresy and Revolutions with Rabbi Samuel Kaye
DESCRIPTION:Heresy and Revolutions with Rabbi Samuel Kaye\nWednesdays\, 7:00 pm (in-person and online) \nJoin Rabbi Kaye for an adult education program on some of the lesser-known stories in our Jewish history. \nTogether\, we will take a deep dive into three major ideas and figures from our Jewish texts and history that have been viewed as heretical or revolutionary. From the story of Alesha ben Abuya\, Rabbinic Judaism’s first ‘heretic’\, to the chutzpadick Jews of the late 19th century who overturned the ‘Three Oaths’ and created modern Zionism. Along the way\, we’ll also stop in the 1600’s to meet the man who claimed to be Moshiach\, the one and only Shabbatai Tzvi. \nRegister here

For any enquiries\, please contact Justin Chow (jchow@holyblossom.org) \n  \nABOUT DR. GILLIAN HELFIELD \nDr. Gillian Helfield is an assistant professor in the Cinema and Media Arts program at York University in Toronto. She wrote her Ph.D. and has published several papers on the subject of Quebecois films of the Quiet Revolution. Other areas of academic interest are Genre Studies\, Cultural Studies\, Women’s Cinema\, National Cinemas and Cinemas of the Diaspora. She co-authored the book Representing the Rural: Space Place and Identity in Films About the Land which explores the links between urban and rural in films spanning different eras and locations. She is also involved in eLearning and experiential education initiatives at York University\, for which she has received several awards in recognition of her research and course design. \nPrior to embarking on a full-time teaching career\, Dr. Helfield worked in the Canadian film and television industry as a free-lance production coordinator and production manager for Atlantis Films\, the Insight Production Company\, Scholastic Television\, Global Television\, the CBC\, and The Canadian Film Centre. \nApart from her teaching at York\, Dr. Helfield works as a programmer for the Toronto Jewish Film Festival\, a facilitator for film clubs\, and as host of the monthly Holy Blossom zoom program ‘What I’m Watching’\, which she started during the COVID 19 pandemic to maintain a sense of community and engagement through the participant’s shared love of cinema. \nGillian believes that films are more than just a medium of entertainment or subject for academic study: they are a reflection of life itself. She can relate everything to a movie\, and she can relate every movie to some aspect of society\, culture\, or everyday life. And she loves nothing better than to share her knowledge\, experience and unique insights with those around her. \n
