SUMMARY:The Story of the Jewish People – An Ongoing Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Story of the Jewish People – An Ongoing Discussion\nwith Mark Goodman \nWednesdays\, October 14-December 31\, 11:00 am \nJewish history is best understood as the story of a people shaped by myth\, memory\, law\, custom\, migration\, adaptation\, and endurance across more than two millennia and six continents. From the biblical narratives of covenant and exile\, rebuke and redemption\, to the post-biblical accounts shaped by recurring forces of persecution and emancipation\, catastrophe and renewal\, Jewish life has developed through constant interaction between inward tradition and outward pressure. \nAt the center of Jewish history stands a religious tradition built on covenant\, sacred law\, communal memory\, and interpretation. The biblical period establishes foundational themes: the relationship between God and Israel\, the importance of Torah\, and the repeated tension between faithfulness and disruption. After the destruction of the First and Second Temples\, Judaism increasingly became a tradition of text\, study\, and practice rather than one centred on a single sacred site. Rabbinic Judaism developed institutions\, commentaries\, and legal frameworks that allowed Jewish identity to survive dispersion and lay the groundwork for a culture built around language\, ritual\, education\, calendar\, family life\, and community organization. At the same time\, Jews in different regions developed distinctive cultural forms: Hebrew\, Aramaic\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, local liturgies\, and philosophical traditions. Over time\, internal diversity became one of the defining features of Jewish civilization. \nJewish history also involves the changing ways Jews organized themselves as communities and negotiated their place in larger political systems. In antiquity\, Israelites moved from a tribal confederation to monarchy\, exile\, and postexilic restoration. In later centuries\, Jews lived under empires\, kingdoms\, caliphates\, city-states\, and modern nation-states. Their legal status varied widely\, from relative autonomy to heavy restriction\, depending on time and place. \nEncounters with surrounding peoples\, religions\, and states have always shaped them. These relations included both exchange and conflict. Jews lived among Babylonians\, Persians\, Greeks\, Romans\, Christians\, Muslims\, and modern secular societies\, and each setting produced distinctive patterns of coexistence and pressure. Sometimes Jews served as intermediaries in trade\, scholarship\, or administration; at other times they were marginalized\, expelled\, forced to convert\, or targeted by violence. \nThroughout all periods\, Jewish history reflects both vulnerability and resilience in the face of changing external worlds. During the course of the program\, we will examine the arc of the Jewish story\, gain an understanding of the challenges and responses\, and explore the relationship between our present-day existence and that of past generations. Please join us on Wednesday at 11 am\, either in person or on Zoom. \nREGISTER HERE TO JOIN US!

SUMMARY:Big Israel Questions: Young (er) Adult Learning Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Big Israel Questions: Young (er) Adult Learning Fellowship\nMondays\, Oct 19\, 26\, Nov 2\, 9\, 23\, 30\, Dec 7\, 14\, 6:30 pm \nFor Jewish adults in their 20s\, 30s\, and 40s\nSharing a table does not require sharing opinions. \nThe questions you’ve been wrestling with. The ones you’ve been hesitant to ask. The ones you’ve been avoiding because our current climate too often rewards certainty over curiosity. Bring them to this eight-week learning community with master Jewish educator Michael Soberman and Rabbi Taylor Baruchel. \nRegister here \n“Big Israel Questions” is generously sponsored by Cheryl & David Blinick and family \nHow do we speak about Israel when the answers aren’t simple?\nFew topics evoke as much passion\, pain\, hope\, and complexity as Israel. For many Jews today\, conversations can feel increasingly polarized\, leaving us caught between certainty and silence. This fellowship offers another way. \nEach evening begins with dinner\, because some of the best Jewish learning happens around a shared table. Through Jewish texts\, history\, contemporary voices\, and honest conversation\, we’ll explore some of the biggest questions facing Israel and the Jewish people today. \nThis is not a debate club or a course that expects everyone to reach the same conclusions. It is a learning community where curiosity is encouraged\, respectful disagreement is welcomed\, and complexity is embraced. \nWhether you’re seeking a deeper understanding of Israel\, wrestling with difficult questions\, or simply looking for a place where you can ask them\, this fellowship invites you to learn with others who believe that curiosity is one of Judaism’s superpowers. \n

SUMMARY:The New Knesset: Diving into the 2026 Israeli Election
DESCRIPTION:The New Knesset: Diving into the 2026 Israeli Election\nSunday\, November 8\, 12:00 pm \nOn Sunday\, November 8th\, join us online for a digital workshop on the Israeli elections. Jeremy Leigh\, master educator from the Hebrew Union College\, will join us from Jerusalem to guide us through the outcome of Israel’s election at the end of October. While it is unlikely that a new Knesset will have already been formed\, the votes will have been tallied\, the mandate assigned\, and Israel’s leaders will be deep in negotiation towards forming the next government! Who will partner up with who? What new alliances will emerge? Who ‘won?’ the election\, and what does that mean for Jews across Israel and across the world? On November 8th\, our discussion will be ripped directly from the headlines. We’ll review the polls and predictions\, address the outcomes\, and discuss the how and the why of these results\, along with what they mean for the future of Israel. \nYou don’t want to miss it! \nRegister here \nThe New Knesset is generously sponsored by Carole and Jay Sterling and Family

SUMMARY:Harry & Blanche Posen Memorial Lecture: Domestic Politics and National Security in Israel
DESCRIPTION:Harry & Blanche Posen Memorial Lecture: Domestic Politics and National Security in Israel\nTuesday\, November 24\, 12:00 pm \nIsrael is facing unprecedented challenges and threats to its national security. Yet its decision-making on the most crucial issues has been flawed\, due mostly to the failures of its political process and structure. \nIsraeli politics are suffering from endemic instability\, increasing polarization and a lack of public trust in political and judicial institutions of the country. Reforms\, therefore\, are badly needed in order to enable the country to counter the existential threats on the regional as well as the global scene. \nThis lecture will present and analyze the most acute and severe threats\, and will then try to describe and analyze the necessary response. This will be done against the background of the recent election results and the chances for a new coalition to govern more effectively. The significance of the electoral outcomes and their impact on possible meaningful political reforms will be addressed as well. \nRegistration coming soon \nSpecial thanks to the Posen\, Spiegel and Cohen families for making this annual event possible. \n  \n\nProfessor Gabriel Ben-Dor.   Gabriel Ben-Dor is Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Haifa in Israel. He served in the past as the Rector of the University\, as well as Chairman of the Department of Political Science\, Director of the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies and Dean of Research. He is a past President of the Israel Political Science Association and a member of a number of high-level public commissions and forums dealing with academic development and policy in Israel and abroad. In the past\, he served as senior adviser on strategic affairs to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. \nProfessor Ben-Dor has been the director of the graduate study program at the National Defense College\, the highest course of the studies in the Israeli Defence Forces. He is the founder of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa; one of the leading research institutes on matters related to defense\, security and strategy in Israel. \nProfessor Ben-Dor has published seven books and over one hundred and twenty articles in scholarly journals on Middle East politics\, the Arab-Israeli conflict\, national security affairs\, strategic studies\, ethnic problems and political theory. \nProfessor Ben-Dor has been a visiting lecturer at a number of universities in Western Europe\, Canada and the United States. He holds a doctorate in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies from Princeton University in the United States.
