DESCRIPTION:Community Dinner: Out of the Cold\nThursdays\, 5:30 pm \nFor more than two decades\, Holy Blossom Temple has generously opened its doors to the Out of the Cold Program (OOTC) during five winter months while providing nutritious meals and shelter to thousands of adults who are homeless\, isolated\, or facing food insecurity. Volunteers prepare warm meals\, serve our guests with dignity\, provide uplifting and meaningful programming\, and provide visitors with vital supplies during the harsh winter months. \nThis year\, 2025-26\, we will open our doors on November 6 at 5:30 pm. It will run for 5 months from Thursday\, November 6\, to the last Thursday of March (March 26) from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm \nLearn more about Out of the Cold at Holy Blossom here! \nReturning\, veteran\, and new volunteers are all welcome! Please contact our volunteer coordinator\, Tabitha Grove (ootc@holyblossom.org)\, to secure your volunteer date and role. DESCRIPTION:Community Dinner: Out of the Cold\nThursdays\, 5:30 pm \nFor more than two decades\, Holy Blossom Temple has generously opened its doors to the Out of the Cold Program (OOTC) during five winter months while providing nutritious meals and shelter to thousands of adults who are homeless\, isolated\, or facing food insecurity. Volunteers prepare warm meals\, serve our guests with dignity\, provide uplifting and meaningful programming\, and provide visitors with vital supplies during the harsh winter months. \nThis year\, 2025-26\, we will open our doors on November 6 at 5:30 pm. It will run for 5 months from Thursday\, November 6\, to the last Thursday of March (March 26) from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm \nLearn more about Out of the Cold at Holy Blossom here! \nReturning\, veteran\, and new volunteers are all welcome! Please contact our volunteer coordinator\, Tabitha Grove (ootc@holyblossom.org)\, to secure your volunteer date and role. Please join us for a lecture in partnership with the Canadian Friends of the University of Haifa. \nDr. David Barak-Gorodetsky is the head of the Elizabeth and Tony Comper Interdisciplinary Center for the study of Antisemitism and Racism\, and the director of the Ruderman Program for American-Jewish Studies at the University of Haifa. He is also a member of the academic committee of the newly established Freeze Center for shared society and teaches at the interfaith MA program. His research interests include Jewish-American history and religious thought\, Israel and World Jewry relations\, Antisemitism and Political Theology\, and the intersection of Antisemitism\, technology\, and AI. \nBorn and raised in Israel\, David was formerly a technology expert in the Israeli Air Force and a VP at an Israeli startup company in NY. In recent years\, he has been a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago Divinity School and a Shalom Hartman and JPPI Fellow. He recently taught about Israel at Jindal Global University in India and is a board member of the Association for Israel Studies (AIS) and was the recent chair of its conference in Haifa. DESCRIPTION:Dorot Presents: \n“The Hollywood Blacklist: Then and Now” with Dr. Gillian Helfield\nTuesday\, January 20\, 11:00 am \nWinter is the perfect time to curl up and watch some movies! As such\, our Dorot group will join together to discuss “The Hollywood Blacklist – Then and Now”\, with renowned film professor and Holy Blossom member\, Dr. Gillian Helfield. \nOur program will explore the ongoing Hollywood boycott of Israeli film institutions\, which has been compared to the Hollywood Blacklist of the McCarthy era in the late 1940s and 1950\, a previous period of extreme polarization in America when political ideology and propaganda were also used as tools to target and silence Jewish voices in the entertainment industry. \nWe’ll gather in the Mishkan (online option available) for a lively lecture and some movie excerpts\, followed by lunch from Holy Grounds Cafe. \nEvent costs $15/member\, $18/non-member. \nRegister (in-person and virtual) HERE! \nGames will begin as per usual at 12:45 pm in the Schwartz/Reisman Atrium. \nThe Dorot program is generously sponsored by a gift from the Estate of Saundra and Henry Sherman. \nABOUT DR. GILLIAN HELFIELD \nDr. Gillian Helfield is an assistant professor in the Cinema and Media Arts program at York University in Toronto. She wrote her Ph.D. and has published several papers on the subject of Quebecois films of the Quiet Revolution. Other areas of academic interest are Genre Studies\, Cultural Studies\, Women’s Cinema\, National Cinemas and Cinemas of the Diaspora. She co-authored the book Representing the Rural: Space Place and Identity in Films About the Land which explores the links between urban and rural in films spanning different eras and locations. She is also involved in eLearning and experiential education initiatives at York University\, for which she has received several awards in recognition of her research and course design. \nPrior to embarking on a full-time teaching career\, Dr. Helfield worked in the Canadian film and television industry as a freelance production coordinator and production manager for Atlantis Films\, the Insight Production Company\, Scholastic Television\, Global Television\, the CBC\, and The Canadian Film Centre. \nApart from her teaching at York\, Dr. Helfield works as a programmer for the Toronto Jewish Film Festival\, a facilitator for film clubs\, and as host of the monthly Holy Blossom zoom program ‘What I’m Watching’\, which she started during the COVID 19 pandemic to maintain a sense of community and engagement through the participant’s shared love of cinema. \nGillian believes that films are more than just a medium of entertainment or subject for academic study: they are a reflection of life itself. She can relate everything to a movie\, and she can relate every movie to some aspect of society\, culture\, or everyday life. And she loves nothing better than to share her knowledge\, experience and unique insights with those around her.
