SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah 5785
DESCRIPTION:Yom HaShoah Service & Commemoration\nWednesday\, April 23\, 7:00 pm \n  \nWe’ll begin with a conversation between congregant Eric Beck Rubin and author John Lorinc\, whose Hungarian Jewish family was protected by a stolen sign that read: ‘No Jews Live Here.’ \nThe prayers\, poetry\, and music of our Yom HaShoah service will move us to reflect upon questions brought to the forefront again.\nSix Holy Blossom families\, descendants of Holocaust survivors\, will light six candles to honour the Six Million. \nBy their light\, we will bear witness to Myrna Sandler’s own story of survival. \nWe send a special invitation to families with children\, ages ten and older\, as they will be the last generation to hear first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors. \nTo join us online\, please visit our livestream page \n  \nJohn Lorinc is a journalist and editor. He reports on urban affairs\, politics\, business\, technology\, and local history for a range of media\, including the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, Walrus\, Maclean’s\, and Spacing\, where he is Senior Editor. John is the author of three other books of non-fiction\, including The New City (Penguin\, 2006)\, and has coedited four other anthologies for Coach House Books: The Ward (2015)\, Subdivided (2016)\, Any Other Way (2017)\, and The Ward Uncovered (2018). John is the recipient of the 2019/2020 Atkinson Fellowship and the 2022 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy. He currently lives in Toronto. His recent interview on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin can be viewed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5DtPl6PRBo \nMyrna Sandler Born in 1927 in Lutsk\, Poland\, Myrna (Musia) Sandler and her family were forced out of their home and into the city’s ghetto in 1941. A Polish farmer\, named Mr. Jarmoszko\, hid them in a haystack from the fall of 1942 to the winter of 1943. The following year\, a Czech farmer\, named Mr. Cepek\, hid them in the attic of his barn and in an underground bunker. This is how Myrna and her family survived the Holocaust. After three years in a German DP camp\, they made their way to Canada in 1948. Myrna is a treasured member of our Holy Blossom Temple community.

SUMMARY:Holy Blossom Goes to the ROM
DESCRIPTION:Holy Blossom Goes to the ROM\nAuschwitz: “Not Long Ago\, Not Far Away” \nSunday\, April 27\, 1:00 pm \n  \nOn the heels of Yom HaShoah\, Holy Blossom Temple will make a congregational visit to this unprecedented exhibition that examines the history and legacy of Auschwitz. \nThis powerful exhibit\, which arrived in Toronto just ahead of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27\, 2025\, explores the dual identity of the Auschwitz camp as a physical setting — the largest documented mass murder site in human history — and as a symbol of the borderless manifestation of hatred and human atrocity. \n“Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away.” underscores a critical need to understand the underlying conditions that allowed the Holocaust to happen. By reflecting on the past\, visitors are invited to consider their role in creating a more inclusive and tolerant society. \nCongregant\, beloved YEC educator\, and past ROM educator Geri Durbin will lead a debrief afterwards and a guided tour of the Judaica exhibit\, which will give us all an opportunity to exhale. \nThis exhibit is only appropriate for children 12+ \nPrices as follows:\nAdult – $31.20\nChild (ages 12-14) – $19.20\nSenior (65+) – $26.50\nStudent (post-secondary) -$25.60\nYouth (ages 15-19) – $25.60 \nMembers of ROM don’t need to pay\, but you will need to register. \n  \nSOLD OUT! Please get in touch with Lisa Isen Baumal at lbaumal@holyblossom.org if you are interested in joining \nLearn more about the exhibit HERE

Since October 7\, 2023\, however\, anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment appears to have intensified. While multiple polls attest to the latter\, the former phenomenon in which Israel is delegitimized is difficult to quantify and assess. In this session\, we will unpack grassroots efforts to dent Israel’s international positioning since October 7\, along with pro-Israel pushback efforts\, in six key arenas: academic\, culture\, digital\, economy\, legal and sports. SUMMARY:Women of Holy Blossom's 2nd Annual Sisterhood & Study Retreat: Women of Valour
DESCRIPTION:Women of Holy Blossom’s 2nd Annual Sisterhood & Study Retreat: Women of Valour\nSunday\, May 4\, 9:30 am \n  \nThis year’s Women of Holy Blossom sisterhood & study retreat will explore the theme Women of Valour. \nOur primary text\, Eishet Chayil (Proverbs 31)\, has been treasured throughout the millennia for its description of the ideal woman. Some feminists have rejected it. Biblical scholars and poets\, in each generation\, have retranslated and recast it in light of new and emerging identities. \nTogether\, with Rabbi Yael Splansky as our teacher and guide\, we will consider the weight of these verses and how they shape our own understanding of Jewish womanhood. \n  \nRegister here \nToronto location will be emailed following your registration.\nParking is available onsite.\nThe cost of $54 per person\, includes lunch (not eligible for a tax receipt).

And how symptoms of depression can be assessed\, addressed and treated. \nFran Kleiner\, social worker for Baycrest Adult Day Programs\, will inform us about various programs and activities at Baycrest that promote enriched living and brain health through socialization with others. \nPlease join us and feel the warmth of community as we learn together\, share together\, and enjoy lunch and table games after the program. \n(Lunch is $15 for Temple members\, $18 for non-members: payment can be made online when you register\, or in cash at the event.) \nFor those who can’t make it in person\, the event will also be livestreamed. The link to the livestream will be provided upon registration. \nWe’ll also record the session and make it available for anyone who’s unable to join us in person\, or virtually\, on the day. \nPlease register here (whether attending in person or online) to join us. \nIf you have a question you’d like addressed by Dr. Conn or Fran Kleiner during the program\, in confidence\, please send it in advance to: theLSMHI@gmail.com \n  \nMore about Dr. Conn: \nDr. David Conn is a Staff Psychiatrist at Baycrest Health Sciences. SUMMARY:Without Precedent: Wisdom for Our Times
DESCRIPTION:Without Precedent: Wisdom for Our Times\nPresented by: Women’s Advocacy Group of Women of Holy Blossom\, in partnership with the Canadian Jewish Women’s Collective \nMonday\, May 12\, 7:30 pm \n  \nA vital conversation with The Honourable Rosalie Abella\, retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and Rabbi Yael Splansky\, Senior Rabbi Holy Blossom Temple.\nLight dessert reception to follow. \nJoin us for an inspiring evening where we will draw wisdom and motivation from Justice Abella and Rabbi Splansky\, two extraordinarily accomplished Canadian Jewish women leaders. This important conversation will address the challenges of our times\, with a focus on the Canadian legal and social context – including women’s rights\, gender-based violence\, antisemitism\, and the power of women to make a difference. \nJustice Rosalie Abella is renowned for her trailblazing role in the Canadian legal system. She was the first Jewish woman and the first refugee to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada\, beginning in 2004\, where she presided until her retirement in June 2021. In her four-plus decades on the bench\, Justice Abella was a passionate and fearless jurist. Her understanding of equality and discrimination informed the meaning of substantive equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms\, which in turn has responded to the needs of women and those from marginalized communities. We highly recommend watching the film Without Precedent: The Supreme Life of Rosalie Abella | Films | CBC Gem\, which chronicles her life\, shining a light on what motivated her and the impact of her work on Canadians. \nRabbi Yael Splansky is the first woman rabbi to be appointed to the role of Senior Rabbi in a leading Canadian synagogue and a fourth-generation Reform Jewish Rabbi. She was recently recognized by the Canadian Parliament with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for her commitment to refugee relief\, support and advocacy for the unhoused and building bridges among faith communities. SUMMARY:Contemporary Jewish Fiction Spring Class
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Jewish Fiction Spring Class\nThursday\, May 15 & 22\, 10:30 am (hybrid) \n  \nWith Cynthia Good \nWe look forward to in-person (and online) learning and the opportunity for in-depth study and our usual lively discussion around The Safekeep\, a fascinating\, provocative book. This is the first novel written by Yael van der Wouden\, an Israeli-born Jewish Dutch writer\, only 37 years old\, widely praised and shortlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize. \n  \nRegister here \n  \nLiving alone in Holland in 1961 in her late mother’s country home\, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva\, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest\, to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late\, walks loudly through the house\, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response\, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession\, and when things start disappearing around the house—a spoon\, a knife\, a bowl—Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. \nThis is a book of surprises\, and just a warning – or an incentive – it gets pretty steamy with a section of unexpected explicit sex. As soon as I read this intriguing novel\, I thought I wanted to study it more closely\, and I look forward to doing so with you and hearing your reactions. All are welcome! \nMysterious\, sophisticated\, sensual\, and infused with intrigue\, atmosphere\, and sex\, The Safekeep is “a brave and thrilling debut about facing up to the truth of history\, and to one’s own desires” (The Guardian) \nWINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION A Best Book of 2024: The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, Time\, The Economist\, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)\, Kirkus Reviews\, The Independent\, BookPage\, The Sunday Times (London)
