SUMMARY:Contemporary Jewish Fiction Spring Class
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Jewish Fiction Spring Class\nThursday\, May 15 & 22\, 10:30 am (hybrid) \n  \nWith Cynthia Good \nWe look forward to in-person (and online) learning and the opportunity for in-depth study and our usual lively discussion around The Safekeep\, a fascinating\, provocative book. This is the first novel written by Yael van der Wouden\, an Israeli-born Jewish Dutch writer\, only 37 years old\, widely praised and shortlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize. \n  \nRegister here \n  \nLiving alone in Holland in 1961 in her late mother’s country home\, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva\, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest\, to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late\, walks loudly through the house\, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response\, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession\, and when things start disappearing around the house—a spoon\, a knife\, a bowl—Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. \nThis is a book of surprises\, and just a warning – or an incentive – it gets pretty steamy with a section of unexpected explicit sex. As soon as I read this intriguing novel\, I thought I wanted to study it more closely\, and I look forward to doing so with you and hearing your reactions. All are welcome! \nMysterious\, sophisticated\, sensual\, and infused with intrigue\, atmosphere\, and sex\, The Safekeep is “a brave and thrilling debut about facing up to the truth of history\, and to one’s own desires” (The Guardian) \nWINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION A Best Book of 2024: The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, Time\, The Economist\, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)\, Kirkus Reviews\, The Independent\, BookPage\, The Sunday Times (London)

Since October 7\, 2023\, however\, anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment appears to have intensified. While multiple polls attest to the latter\, the former phenomenon in which Israel is delegitimized is difficult to quantify and assess. In this session\, we will unpack grassroots efforts to dent Israel’s international positioning since October 7\, along with pro-Israel pushback efforts\, in six key arenas: academic\, culture\, digital\, economy\, legal and sports. The findings presented in this session are based on research conducted by the MIND Israel team\, culminating in February 2025. \nPrior to joining MIND\, Michal held various managerial and research positions in the academic\, philanthropic\, and civil-society sectors\, including at the Azrieli Foundation\, the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS)\, the Institute for Inclusive Security\, and the Geneva Initiative (HL Education for Peace). She is a Founding Member of Forum Dvorah: Women in Foreign Policy and National Security and an adjunct lecturer at Tel Aviv University. Her research focuses on soft challenges for Israel in the international arena\, including legitimacy issues\, relations with the Western world (Europe and the US)\, international organizations and Israel-Diaspora Jewry relations. \nRead: Theorizing state stigmatization: A comparative perspective on South Africa and Israel \nThursday\, May 22\nBen Murane\nCivil Society:  from Progressive to Extremist in Israeli Society\nBen Murane is the Executive Director of the New Israel Fund of Canada and a leading voice of millennial engagement with Israel. For over twelve years\, Ben has led at the intersection of Jewish life\, social justice\, and Israel. SUMMARY:Holy Blossom Goes to the Nova Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Holy Blossom Goes to the Nova Exhibit\nTuesday\, June 3\, 7:00 pm \n  \nTogether as a Holy Blossom community\, we will visit this harrowing exhibit\, and find comfort and strength in one another as we remember October 7\, and the festival which became an epicentre of horror on that terrible day. \nWe will commemorate and debrief together following our exhibit tour\, supporting each other in that way. \nPlease note that the Exhibition is recommended for ages 12+ due to the sensitive and graphic nature of some of the content. We further recommend that children between 12 and 16 years old be accompanied by a trusted adult. \nYou can learn more here: https://www.novaexhibition.com/ \n  \nRegister here \nTickets are $28/person\, as per the exhibit website.\nWe will let our registrants know the precise Midtown location\, as the exhibit releases this information.\nPlease arrive at 6:45 pm\, for a 7:00 pm start. \n  \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT \nVisitors will travel on a timeline of the Nova Music Festival on October 7th\, telling the story of the events on that dreadful day. A carefully-crafted mosaic of information\, evidence\, and emotion. The remains of joy\, which now serves as bleak evidence of the sharp contrast between revered values and the cruel sting of the reality of that day. We invite you to walk through the winding path from the depths of pain and loss to the threshold of action\, the healing and the hope of the community. The events on that black Saturday will be presented as a shocking contrast between light and darkness\, good and evil\, that is relevant to the entire world. \nThe installation creates a sacred space echoing the weight of the victims’ and survivors’ memories\, surrounded by remains salvaged from the festival grounds—scorched cars\, bullet-riddled bathroom stalls\, and personal belongings all left behind. Visitors will be invited to join a plea for the safe return of the hostages who are still held in captivity by Hamas terrorists. Nova survivors of the brutal attack will be attending as witnesses to the tragedy they experienced on that day. Beyond the brutality and evil that occurred on October 7\, the exhibition will capture the enduring spirit of the Tribe of Nova with the installation of the healing room. This sanctuary is intended for visitors to mend their spirits\, reflect\, and find solace after bearing witness to the harrowing events of The Nova Music Festival. Hanging tall and bright is the hopeful plea that “We will dance again”.
