SUMMARY:Contemporary Jewish Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Jewish Fiction\nWith Cynthia Good \nThursdays\, 10:30 am (hybrid) \nWe look forward to in-person (and online) learning and the opportunity for in-depth study. Join us this fall for our usual lively discussion around two novels with profound explorations of family and moral values by two Israeli women writers. \n  \nRegister here \n  \nThe Wolf Hunt by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen \nAward-winning author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen returns with a timely and suspenseful exploration of the fault lines in a community\, a school and a family\, as a mother begins to suspect her teenage son of committing a terrible crime. \n“A novel of ideas\, a thriller and a character study’ OBSERVER \n‘Ensnares her characters in heart-stopping moral dilemmas’ MAIL ON SUNDAY \nOn Her Own by Lihi Lapid \nSet between the eve of Passover and Israel’s Independence Day\, On Her Own is a tense and immersive psychological read about two families looking for redemption and the transformative bonds between strangers. When Nina\, a teenage runaway\, is found by Carmela\, a lonely old widow suffering from memory loss\, she mistakes Nina for the granddaughter she hasn’t seen in years. Meanwhile\, Nina’s mother is in agony as she worries over her daughter’s disappearance. \n“The plot of On Her Own is propulsive. . . . From start to finish\, it is an engaging\, illuminating story of family and injury. It examines grief\, the fallacies of wishful thinking\, and persistent hope in a way that many readers will find memorable.” — Jewish Book Council

SUMMARY:Zaidy's Band: The Untold Stories of a Jewish Band of Brothers in World War II
DESCRIPTION:Zaidy’s Band: The Untold Stories of a Jewish Band of Brothers in World War II\nSunday\, November 16\, 3:30 pm\nAt Beth Tzedec Synagogue\, 1700 Bathurst St\, Toronto\, ON M5P 3K3\, in the Mezzanine Hall \n  \nIn Zaidy’s Band\, Aron Heller chronicles his extensive journey with his grandfather — his Zaidy — to uncover long-time Beth Tzedec member Mickey Heller’s mysterious wartime past and the untold stories of his Jewish Canadian “band of brothers.” The book explores Heller’s efforts to document their fates and the turbulent process of founding a museum in Israel dedicated to the 1.5 million Jewish soldiers like them who fought in World War II. \nAdditionally\, come and hear Aron Heller speak at our Israel Dialogues session on November 14th. \nThrough eight trips from Israel to meet with his Zaidy in Toronto\, along with countless calls and messages\, Heller offers a fresh perspective on the often-silent majority of World War II veterans. The book uncovers dozens of previously unknown stories of lost friendships\, personal tragedies\, acts of heroism and emotional reunions. These men played key roles in the defining events of their time – fighting against Nazism and contributing to the establishment of Israel. Their voices\, however\, are not mere relics of the past. The dilemmas they faced – faith\, belonging\, courage and sacrifice – continue to resonate today\, shaping the Jewish experience as we confront rising antisemitism and the challenges facing the Jewish state. \nPart memoir\, part historical biography\, and part mystery\, Zaidy’s Band reveals how even the humblest acts of World War II service shaped a generation of men and left a lasting impact on their families for years to come. \nAron Heller is an Israel-based reporter\, writer\, columnist and broadcaster. Please come to listen to him on November 14th during our Israel Dialogues session. \nBooks will be available for purchase at a special 25% discount off the retail price. \nPlease sign up for the event by visiting Beth Tzedec’s website here https://www.beth-tzedec.org/page/beth-tzedec-calendar/a/display/s/0/item/zaidy-s-band-the-untold-stories-of-a-jewish-band-of-brothers-in-world-war-ii

His World War II nonfiction narrative\, No Surrender\, coauthored with Chris Edmonds\, was the recipient of a 2020 Christopher Award. Century was born and raised in Calgary and graduated from Princeton University. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, The Globe and Mail\, Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, and The Guardian. \n\nReview:\n“In breathless prose and cinematic detail\, the book presents the men and women from all backgrounds joined in concert to save something of European Jewry. We hear the roar of airplane engines\, feel the wind as they jump\, and brace for impact as they land. We follow them through Eastern European woodlands and shadow them through city streets. . . . This is a book of inspiration for our time\, when heroism and self-sacrifice have lost their luster.” —Kirkus Reviews
