SUMMARY:Welcome\, Rabbi Jordan Helfman
DESCRIPTION:Welcome\, Rabbi Jordan Helfman\nSaturday\, August 16\, 10:30 am \nSermon for Shabbat Eikev\, 5785\n“Comparative Suffering: Who Has It Worse Now\, Canadian or British Jewry?” \nJoin us in sacred worship \nWe look forward to welcoming Rabbi Helfman and his family for a summer visit. Many will remember his kindness\, his thoughtfulness\, and his humour. Over seven good years\, Rabbi Helfman made his mark on Holy Blossom and the greater Jewish community of Toronto. Come hear his rabbinic reflections on the news of the day — here\, there\, and everywhere. \nRabbi Jordan Helfman is in his fourth year at Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue\, on the edge of North East London towards Essex. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis and Cantors and the Co-Vice Chair of Arzenu Olami. Each summer\, he loves returning to Holy Blossom Temple\, where he served as Assistant then Associate Rabbi\, so he can visit with the community\, eat challah with streusel\, and cinnamon raisin bagels with smoked salmon.

SUMMARY:Dorot Presents: Baking for Rosh Hashanah
DESCRIPTION:Dorot Presents: Baking for Rosh Hashanah\nwith Rebecca Howard \nTuesday\, September 9\, 11:00 am \n  \nJoin your Dorot friends while we learn to bake a delicious apple and honey cake for Rosh Hashanah with acclaimed baker and owner of “Becked Goods”\, Rebecca Howard.\nShe will teach us her special recipe for the holiday\, as we come together for an intimate pre-Rosh Hashana gathering to launch the 5786 year of Dorot programming. \nCost is $36 member/$40 non-member\, as ingredients and equipment will all be supplied by Rebecca and the Dorot team. Limited spots available. \nRegister here \nThe Dorot program is generously sponsored by a gift from the Estate of Saundra and Henry Sherman \n  \nABOUT REBECCA HOWARD: \nRebecca was born and raised in Toronto\, and her love and passion for food developed early on in the kitchen with her family\, specifically her Nana (grandmother) and dad. Instead of cartoons\, she would watch every cooking and baking show on The Food Network\, constantly playing “Chopped” with her own kitchen fridge and pantry as inspiration.\nRebecca studied at Western University and attended the Ivey Business School. While in school\, Rebecca kept up creating fun and exciting dishes in the kitchen during her spare time\, finding every excuse and celebration to bake for. Upon graduating with an Honours Business Administration degree\, Rebecca enrolled immediately in Humber College’s Baking and Pastry Management program in the fall of 2017. \nBecked Goods\, which began as an Instagram account to share Rebecca’s pastry school adventures with friends and family\, quickly blossomed into a side business. Friends of friends began reaching out with inquiries\, and excitedly\, the business grew tremendously through 2019 and in 2020\, became a full-time venture. With humble beginnings from her parents’ kitchen\, Rebecca worked with customers individually\, each creation made to order.\nIn October 2022\, Becked Goods opened its first brick-and-mortar location at 684 St. Clair Ave W (Rear Unit). It is a hidden gem of a bakery\, much like Becked Goods has been since its inception.

After some 20 years in administrative capacities\, he now concentrates his energies on teaching and writing. Born and raised in England and educated at the University of Oxford\, Michael made aliyah to Israel in 1984. While studying for an M.A. in Ancient Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, he completed his studies in the Israel Rabbinic Program of Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem\, and was ordained in 1992. For six years following his ordination\, he worked as rabbi and teacher at the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa. Michael Marmur served for three years as Chair of the Board of Rabbis for Human Rights. Known as a masterful teacher\, like his father before him\, Professor Marmur has lectured and taught courses in several countries around the world.  He is the author of many books\, including his most recent\, “Living the Letters:  An Alphabet of Emerging Jewish Thought.” \n“Living the Letters:  An Alphabet of Emerging Jewish Thought”\nIn this work\, Michael Marmur employs the structure of the Hebrew alphabet to set out elements of an emerging Jewish theology\, presenting a case for the urgent relevance of Jewish life at a time of deepening rupture and accelerating change. He presents core components of a theory and practice of contemporary Judaism. The Hebrew alphabet has long beguiled and preoccupied Biblical authors and liturgical poets\, rationalists and mystics\, conservatives and radicals. It has served as a locus of theological speculation\, an engine of creativity and a recurrent motif throughout the cycle of life\, from childhood instruction to graveside recitation. For each letter of the Hebrew alphabet\, Marmur proposes a concept\, gleaned from theology\, philosophy\, ritual\, politics\, community and other fields. Readers are invited to combine and deploy them in imagining a Judaism of tomorrow. \nInterview about the book here:\nhttps://huc.edu/news/people-of-the-book-faculty-michael-marmur-uses-the-alphabet-to-ponder-questions-of-contemporary-jewish-life/ \nAvailable for purchase here:\nhttps://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/living-the-letters-an-alphabet-of-emerging-jewish-thought/9783031810404.html
