SUMMARY:The Story of the Jewish People – An Ongoing Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Story of the Jewish People – An Ongoing Discussion\nwith Mark Goodman \nWednesdays\, September 16-December 31\, 11:00 am \nJewish history is best understood as the story of a people shaped by myth\, memory\, law\, custom\, migration\, adaptation\, and endurance across more than two millennia and six continents. From the biblical narratives of covenant and exile\, rebuke and redemption\, to the post-biblical accounts shaped by recurring forces of persecution and emancipation\, catastrophe and renewal\, Jewish life has developed through constant interaction between inward tradition and outward pressure. \nAt the center of Jewish history stands a religious tradition built on covenant\, sacred law\, communal memory\, and interpretation. The biblical period establishes foundational themes: the relationship between God and Israel\, the importance of Torah\, and the repeated tension between faithfulness and disruption. After the destruction of the First and Second Temples\, Judaism increasingly became a tradition of text\, study\, and practice rather than one centred on a single sacred site. Rabbinic Judaism developed institutions\, commentaries\, and legal frameworks that allowed Jewish identity to survive dispersion and lay the groundwork for a culture built around language\, ritual\, education\, calendar\, family life\, and community organization. At the same time\, Jews in different regions developed distinctive cultural forms: Hebrew\, Aramaic\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, local liturgies\, and philosophical traditions. Over time\, internal diversity became one of the defining features of Jewish civilization. \nJewish history also involves the changing ways Jews organized themselves as communities and negotiated their place in larger political systems. In antiquity\, Israelites moved from a tribal confederation to monarchy\, exile\, and postexilic restoration. In later centuries\, Jews lived under empires\, kingdoms\, caliphates\, city-states\, and modern nation-states. Their legal status varied widely\, from relative autonomy to heavy restriction\, depending on time and place. \nEncounters with surrounding peoples\, religions\, and states have always shaped them. These relations included both exchange and conflict. Jews lived among Babylonians\, Persians\, Greeks\, Romans\, Christians\, Muslims\, and modern secular societies\, and each setting produced distinctive patterns of coexistence and pressure. Sometimes Jews served as intermediaries in trade\, scholarship\, or administration; at other times they were marginalized\, expelled\, forced to convert\, or targeted by violence. \nThroughout all periods\, Jewish history reflects both vulnerability and resilience in the face of changing external worlds. During the course of the program\, we will examine the arc of the Jewish story\, gain an understanding of the challenges and responses\, and explore the relationship between our present-day existence and that of past generations. Please join us on Wednesday at 11 am\, either in person or on Zoom. \nREGISTER HERE TO JOIN US!  \nClick the links below to download some reading materials for this discussion \nChronology\nIn the beginning\nThe creation and evolution of Jewish texts

We will ceremonially change the Torah mantels to white\, reflect on the trying year it has been\, and ready ourselves\, with renewed spiritual courage\, to welcome the year 5787. \n  \n\nRabbi Lawrence A. Englander is the founding Rabbi of Solel Congregation\, Mississauga\, serving there since its inception in 1973 until his retirement in June 2014; he now serves Solel as Rabbi Emeritus.  He is also Adjunct Rabbi at Temple Sinai in Toronto. \nRabbi Englander received his Doctorate of Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in the field of Jewish Mysticism and Rabbinics.  He has taught in the Religious Studies Department at York University and spent a semester teaching rabbinical students at Leo Baeck College in London\, England.  He has written several articles on Jewish Mysticism\, as well as a book\, The Mystical Study of Ruth\, published by Scholars Press.  He is a former Editor of the Central Conference of American Rabbis Journal. \nAnother passion of Rabbi Englander’s is liberal Zionism\, a subject on which he has written and edited articles.  He served as Chair of ARZENU\, a world-wide progressive Zionist organization\, from 2014 to 2017.  He is co-editor (with Rabbi Stanley Davids) of the book Fragile Dialogue: New Voices in Liberal Zionism\, published by CCAR Press.  He is also on the International Council of the New Israel Fund. \nIn 2005\, he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for his work in the community. \nHe has also published a novel\, The Prince of Healers\, a historical fiction based on the life of Rabbi Moses Maimonides. \nRabbi Englander and his wife Cheryl are natives of Toronto\, Canada. \nRabbi Mark Dov Shapiro z”l served Holy Blossom Temple from 1977-1982.  He is remembered by many with admiration and warm friendship.https://holyblossom.org/remembering-rabbi-mark-dov-shapiro-zl/. The majority of his rabbinate was in Springfield\, Massachusetts\, but he and his wife\, Marsha\, both native Torontonians\, always maintained close ties here. Rabbi Shapiro was especially devoted to interfaith relations\, social justice\, pastoral care\, and lifelong learning. He strengthened the Reform Movement by serving on many committees and writing publications for the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union of Reform Judaism. Most of all\, Rabbi Shapiro is forever cherished for his constant warmth and kindness. Family and friends\, colleagues and congregants have given generously to establish an annual lecture in Rabbi Shapiro’s name. We dedicate this learning to his memory.

SUMMARY:The New Knesset: Diving into the 2026 Israeli Election
DESCRIPTION:The New Knesset: Diving into the 2026 Israeli Election\nSunday\, August 30\, 12:00 pm \nOn Sunday\, August 30th\, join us online for a digital workshop on the upcoming Israeli elections. Jeremy Leigh\, master educator from the Hebrew Union College\, will join us from Jerusalem to guide us through the ‘modern tribe’s’ of Israeli society\, what they care about\, who they are voting for\, and what may happen at the polls this Fall. Along the way\, we’ll introduce you to familiar and new faces in the Israeli political arena and reveal who they would never make an alliance with… and who might just become the strangest of bedfellows. \nThis is the first of two events (the second will be after the elections). Then\, once the dust has settled and a coalition has been formed\, Jeremy will join us once again on November 8th. We’ll review the predictions\, address the outcomes\, and discuss the how and the why of these results\, along with what they mean for the future of Israel. \nRegister here \nThe New Knesset is generously sponsored by Carole and Jay Sterling and Family \nWATCH: Jeremy Leigh\, the head of the Israel Studies program at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem\, discussed the upcoming Israeli elections scheduled for October 27th\, emphasizing that these are not normal circumstances due to recent events including struggles to preserve Israeli democracy and an upsurge in anti-Semitism worldwide. Jeremy invited viewers to discuss and debate the best leadership candidates for the Jewish people and the State of Israel during these dramatic times.
