SUMMARY:Book Launch and Signing: Ten Clear Days
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch and Signing: Ten Clear Days\nA novel by Eric Beck Rubin \nSunday\, April 26\, 11:00 am \nOn a Tuesday night in August 2018\, eighty-three-year-old Holocaust survivor\, Mary Beck is rushed by ambulance to the hospital. She wakes up to the news that her surgery was a success and her recovery is underway––but she doesn’t want to hear it. She had been preparing for her end. And with newly enacted legislation\, she can demand it. \nBefore a decision can be made on whether to grant her request\, a member of the non-medical hospital staff\, “Au.\,” is brought in to record the unfolding events. But what begins as an arm’s-length report during ten mandated days that Mary awaits her fate\, soon turns into a sweeping examination of a life. \nFrom her upbringing in pre-war Hungary and survival of the war\, to the start of her new life in Canada\, Mary\, along with her family and friends\, tells the story of this complicated\, forceful\, fiercely loved person at every stage of her extraordinary life. A life she now fights to end on her own terms. \nRegister here \n\nEric Beck Rubin is a novelist and academic. His début\, School of Velocity\, was named one of the Guardian’s Books of the Year. He created and produced the Burning Books literary review and interview podcast. He teaches architectural and cultural history at the University of Toronto and collaborates with art galleries and architecture firms on exhibitions and design competitions. SUMMARY:Rosh Chodesh Iyar
DESCRIPTION:Rosh Chodesh Iyar\nFriday\, April 17\, 7:30 am \n  \nRosh Chodesh\, meaning head of the month\, is a holiday celebrating the arrival of a new moon. It is often celebrated by women as a day off from work. All genders are welcome to join Women of Holy Blossom and pray in solidarity with Israel’s Women of the Wall. Join Women of Holy Blossom in sacred worship for Shacharit services followed by a light breakfast. \nRosh Chodesh Iyar: Honouring Susan Mogil\nBy Gerry Prendergast \n\nSusan has a long\, if interrupted\, history with Holy Blossom Temple. Her parents\, Asher and Judith Leranbaum\, were long-time members. Susan attended religious school\, was confirmed and married here.\nSusan and Norman attend Shabbat services regularly and enjoy many cultural events at Temple. \nSusan volunteers as an Usher at Shabbat services and during the High Holy Days. She is a co-lead usher with me\, and I am very happy to have her by my side!! Her most active participation is on the archives committee\, which meets every Tuesday of the year with time off for the chagim. \nSusan was an early and steadfast supporter of the Torah Stitch by Stitch project. She was one of a team of proofreaders of completed panels. She assisted in keeping track of where the panels were in the world and communicating with many of the stitchers. \nSusan shared with me that she has always found close friends within the various synagogues she has been a member of. Having rejoined Holy Blossom in 2020\, she is a very welcome face to many of the congregation. I am honoured to present Susan as a Woman of Valour and my dear friend. \n  \nFor those planning on joining us in sacred worship online\, please click “Register Here” (below) to receive our new service links. You will be asked to provide your full name and email address as an enhanced security measure for our Online Daily Service participants. The Zoom links will be sent to the email address you provided in your registration. Lunch is included\, and books are available for pre-purchase during registration for an additional $23 or on the day for $25. \nSIGN UP HERE (in-person and virtual attendance) \nLunch catered by Holy Grounds Cafe to follow\, with Games in our Schwartz/Reisman Atrium beginning at 12:45 pm as usual. \nThe Dorot program is generously sponsored by a gift from the Estate of Saundra and Henry Sherman\nThis program is generously sponsored by Louise Blumenstein\, in honour of her husband\, Jan Blumenstein z”l \n  \nABOUT “The Boy in the Back; A True Story of Survival in Auschwitz and Mauthausen” \nA searing and inspirational memoir\, The Boy in the Back is a “must read.” As the echoes of history grow louder\, author Fern Lebo delivers a searing memoir. With clarity and restraint\, The Boy in the Back preserves the lived experience of Jan Blumenstein\, whose life stands as both a testament to human resilience and a warning against historical amnesia. From the dehumanization of transport trains to the daily struggle for survival inside the camps\, the book captures the physical and psychological toll of the Holocaust while honouring the strength required to endure it. It does not soften the horror\, nor does it exploit it. Instead\, it bears witness. What distinguishes this memoir from others is its immediate relevance. Lebo draws a direct line between Jan’s experiences and the unsettling resurgence of antisemitism today. She also offers a rare and moving contrast: the arc from unimaginable suffering to the joy of a peaceful old age. Jan’s survival is proof that even after profound trauma\, life\, meaning\, and dignity can endure. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n\nFern Lebo is a Toronto native and internationally published author whose work crosses genres — from poetry to business books to historical narrative. Following the October 7 massacre\, Fern began interviewing Jan Blumenstein and writing his memoir. Her evocative style conveys Jan’s courage and tenacious will to live\, creating an intimate connection with The Boy in the Back\, Jan’s true account of survival as told to Fern\, his friend and writing voice. The book preserves Jan’s lived experience and stands as both a testament to human resilience and a warning against historical amnesia. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Commemoration 5786
DESCRIPTION:Yom HaShoah Commemoration 5786\nMonday\, April 13\, 7:00 pm \nJoin in music and memory\, prayer and poetry.  Six congregant-families\, descendants of survivors of the Shoah\, will light six candles for the Six Million.  The centrepiece of our service is when we bear witness to the remarkable story of Saul Shulman’s survival. \nJoin us in-person or online \nClick here for the Service Pages (Service begins on page 359) \n\nBorn in 1938 in the small town of Klimontov\, Poland\, Saul Shulman remembers very little of the peaceful life his family knew before they were transferred to the Tzozmer ghetto.  He was just three years old.  Miraculously\, he survived Auschwitz and eventually came to Canada with his mother in 1948. \n\nAll are welcome\, and we send a special invitation to our B’nei Mitzvah students\, our teens\, and their parents.  This will be the last generation to hear first-hand testimonials of survivors.  This comes with a great responsibility.
