DESCRIPTION:The Story of the Jewish People – An Ongoing Discussion\nwith Mark Goodman \nWednesdays\, September 16-December 31\, 11:00 am \nJewish history is best understood as the story of a people shaped by myth\, memory\, law\, custom\, migration\, adaptation\, and endurance across more than two millennia and six continents. From the biblical narratives of covenant and exile\, rebuke and redemption\, to the post-biblical accounts shaped by recurring forces of persecution and emancipation\, catastrophe and renewal\, Jewish life has developed through constant interaction between inward tradition and outward pressure. \nAt the center of Jewish history stands a religious tradition built on covenant\, sacred law\, communal memory\, and interpretation. The biblical period establishes foundational themes: the relationship between God and Israel\, the importance of Torah\, and the repeated tension between faithfulness and disruption. After the destruction of the First and Second Temples\, Judaism increasingly became a tradition of text\, study\, and practice rather than one centred on a single sacred site. Rabbinic Judaism developed institutions\, commentaries\, and legal frameworks that allowed Jewish identity to survive dispersion and lay the groundwork for a culture built around language\, ritual\, education\, calendar\, family life\, and community organization. At the same time\, Jews in different regions developed distinctive cultural forms: Hebrew\, Aramaic\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, local liturgies\, and philosophical traditions. Over time\, internal diversity became one of the defining features of Jewish civilization. \nJewish history also involves the changing ways Jews organized themselves as communities and negotiated their place in larger political systems. In antiquity\, Israelites moved from a tribal confederation to monarchy\, exile\, and postexilic restoration. In later centuries\, Jews lived under empires\, kingdoms\, caliphates\, city-states\, and modern nation-states. Their legal status varied widely\, from relative autonomy to heavy restriction\, depending on time and place. \nEncounters with surrounding peoples\, religions\, and states have always shaped them. These relations included both exchange and conflict. Jews lived among Babylonians\, Persians\, Greeks\, Romans\, Christians\, Muslims\, and modern secular societies\, and each setting produced distinctive patterns of coexistence and pressure. Sometimes Jews served as intermediaries in trade\, scholarship\, or administration; at other times they were marginalized\, expelled\, forced to convert\, or targeted by violence. \nThroughout all periods\, Jewish history reflects both vulnerability and resilience in the face of changing external worlds. During the course of the program\, we will examine the arc of the Jewish story\, gain an understanding of the challenges and responses\, and explore the relationship between our present-day existence and that of past generations. DESCRIPTION:And None Shall Make Them Afraid: A Conversation with the RCMP and the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism\nWednesday\, November 25\, 7:00 pm \nPresented by the Holy Blossom Temple Advocacy Committee \nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 25th at Holy Blossom Temple for an important conversation about the ongoing security threats to our Canadian Jewish community – and how we can best respond. \nHoly Blossom Temple is honoured to welcome Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Richard Baylin\, the highest-ranking Jewish officer in the RCMP. Joining him for conversation will be Mark Sandler\, the founder and Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA). Together they will discuss the current threats to the Jewish community of Canada\, along with how Canadian society can best respond. \nBut every family shall sit\nUnder its own vine and fig tree\nWith no one to make them afraid. \nMicah 4:4 \nAssistant Commissioner Baylin will bring a rare glimpse into the world of national policing\, discussing how the RCMP has already acted against antisemitic terrorist groups targeting our community. He will also\, where feasible\, discuss some of the ongoing challenges and potential solutions that the RCMP sees in response to this surge of hatred. Mark Sandler will discuss the work of the ALCCA\, and how it is working to combat hate crimes targeting our community by promoting robust use of the criminal law against extremism and by training police and prosecutors across the country. Together\, they will help us paint a wider picture of the threat we face\, and the solutions available to us to defend our community and our good country of Canada. \nRegistration coming soon \n\n\nAssistant Commissioner Richard Baylin joined the RCMP in 1991 out of Ottawa. After completing basic recruit training in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, he was posted to White Rock Detachment in British Columbia where he conducted uniform General Duties on a variety of Criminal Code and federal investigations. In 1996\, he transferred to the Greater Vancouver Drug Section\, participating in investigations targeting the upper echelon of organized crime syndicates from Latin America and the Caribbean. From British Columbia\, he transferred to RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa. \nRichard has over 34 years of international and domestic police experience as a manager\, instructor\, investigator\, subject-matter expert and facilitator in a variety of areas. In his diverse law enforcement background\, he has held positions overseeing the RCMP’s International Operations\, heading up INTERPOL Canada\, and supervising RCMP engagement and involvement in United Nations Program Management and International Capacity Building. He has also been in charge of the Federal Policing National Border Task Force\, Federal Policing Cybercrime and a number of areas within RCMP Covert Operations Branch\, which includes the Human Source Program and Undercover Program. In addition\, he has worked in RCMP Protective Operations and in Professional Standards. \nIn his current role\, Richard oversees the RCMP Federal Policing National Security program and is responsible for oversight and strategic direction of national security criminal investigations and operations across Canada and abroad. This includes extensive collaboration with Government of Canada departments\, domestic and international policing organizations\, security and intelligence partners\, and private sector to combat threats to Canada’s and international partner’s safety and security. \nHe holds a bachelor’s degree from Carleton University and a Graduate Certificate from the Australian Institute of Police Management (Australian Federal Police). He has also helped deliver the AIPM program as a Visiting Fellow. \n\n  \n\nMark Sandler\, LL.B.\, LL.D. (honoris causa) is the founder and Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA)\, a diverse coalition of 70+ community organizations and groups that collaboratively address antisemitism through advocacy\, education and respectful dialogue. He is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading criminal lawyers and pro bono advocates. He has been involved in combatting antisemitism for over 40 years. He has lectured extensively on legal remedies to combat hate\, trained police and prosecutors on hate crimes\, and has been involved in multiple inter-community and interfaith dialogues. \nSandler has appeared before Parliamentary committees and in the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions on issues relating to antisemitism and hate activities. He is a former member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal\, a three-time elected Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario\, and recipient of the criminal profession’s highest honour\, the G. Arthur Martin Medal\, for his contributions to the administration of criminal justice.
