[email protected]: The Circumcision Debates

With Professor David Koffman, Associate Professor in the Department of History

Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at 7:30 PM

$10 non-member per session

Circumcision of infant males in modern Western countries has generated an enormous amount of fiery controversy over the past 100 years. This talk discusses the perennial but shifting anxieties in those debates: ones that centre on ethics & religious tolerance, on prophylaxis & hygiene, and on pain & sexual pleasure. All of these debates have, in different times and for different reasons, focused on this highly charged and somewhat taboo “absence” – the foreskin removed. We analyze how and why Jewishness features strongly in nearly every twist and turn in circumcision’s strange history.
