The Meaning of Jewish Existence
With Rabbi Michael Stroh, rabbi emeritus Temple Har Zion
February 3, 10, 24 and March 2, 2020
Hermann Cohen was a great German Philosopher in the late 19th & early 20the centuries. He was, also, a great Jewish philosopher. His Jewish magnum opus was Religion of Reason Out of the Sources of Judaism. Martin Buber was an early Jewish thinker, also, German. His best-known book, I and Thou, addressed to all people. He also wrote about the particular meaning of being Jewish and being a member of the Jewish People. When the Nazis came to power, Buber made aliyah to Israel.
Cohen and Buber, both liberal, religious Jews had very different ideas of the meaning of being a Jew.
