Jonah the Comedian, with Professor Ehrlich
November 18, 2020, at 7:30 pm
Everyone thinks the Bible is a serious book, and it certainly is … in part. However, there are many biblical passages that are quite playful from a linguistic perspective, delighting in the clever use of language, and there are even some sections that openly use humour to convey their messages. One of these is the book of Jonah, which is traditionally read on Yom Kippur, the most sombre day of the Jewish year. Perhaps counterintuitively, this lecture will argue that, while the message of Jonah is quite serious, the book’s message is conveyed in a manner meant to tickle your funny bones.
