The Centre for Arts & Culture of Schwartz/Reisman program presents

Jewish Images from the Early Days of CBC Television

with Stuart Hands, Programme Director of The Toronto Jewish Film Festival and Gillian Helfield, Professor of Film at York University

December 9 & 16, 2019
at 7:30 pm

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view three archival dramas from the early days of CBC Television.

Beginning in 1952, the first two decades of CBC Television saw a large and unprecedented proportion of Jewish artists working on its programmes. Revisiting this almost-forgotten age of inspired TV drama and comedy, Canadian Jews can take pride in the many prolific writers, directors and performers who made significant contributions to this era, and the stories of Jewish life they told.

Dec 9: Staff of Life (1955), starring Sammy Sales and Martin Lavut, and The Littlest of Kings (1959), based on a story by Sholem Aleichem

Dec 16: The Slip Knot (1961), starring Ben and Sylvia Lennick and Larry Mann

In 1947, we came to Canada from London, England. With my Father, bringing with him a new and unknown Diamond Profession. It was how Diamonds were used in industry.
The “National Film Board” heard of my Father,
“Maurice Lewy”. After being on television many times, they contacted my Dad, they made a film of him!
Who was the announcer? “Lorne Green” aka the actor from Bonanza. This film was shown coast-to-coast in all of the theatres.
If you would like to use this film, just contact me!
