Israel in the Islamic World Today

With Dr. Joe Hodes

Presented by: The Schwartz/Reisman Centre for Adult Jewish Learning

Wednesday, August 23, 7:00 pm

When thinking about Israel in relation to her neighbours, we often think of the Arabs, thus the Arab-Israeli conflict. Israel, however, finds herself smack dab in the middle of the Islamic world and the Islamic world is much more than Arab. It is also Persian, Berber, and Indian amongst others. What is the role of Israel in the larger Islamic world? This talk will explore Israel’s relationship with the larger Islamic world and will explore the relationship of the Islamic world with itself. Iran is Persian. The Persians and the Arabs have a long history of animosity. As the Arabs go into decline, they fear the Persians who are on the rise. This makes them reevaluate their relationship with Israel. From the war in Afghanistan and Iraq to the Arab Spring, the Islamic world has undergone great changes. This talk will attempt to clarify Israel’s position in the Islamic world today.

This talk is designed for a general audience. You don’t need to know anything about the Middle East, to understand or enjoy this talk.
