About “The GGs” – the Little Choir That Grew
The GGs began just a decade ago when Eva Ormut, then with Holy Blossom Temple Singers and Cantor Beny Maissner’s Lachan Chamber Choir, thought it would be nice to have a mini-choir. She enlisted singing friends to meet regularly on Thursdays. The mandate was simple – improve choral skills like sight-singing and blend. The little group of 6 or so felt they needed a guide and turned to Gwyneth Sestito, lead soprano and choir conductor for Holy Blossom’s Temple Singers, Music Director and conductor for Alexander Showcase Theatre’s musicals.
The group expanded to two weekly sessions as more people joined, attracted by the skills, camaraderie, and the sheer fun. Holy Blossom’s Bikkur Cholim committee and Rabbi Eliza McCarroll asked the group to share the fun at a retirement residence where some Temple members lived. For that occasion, we became the GGs (Gwyneth’s Girls) and the name stuck.
Our repertoire is varied – folk tunes in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, French and Gaelic, classical selections, Broadway show tunes, even barbershop. We sing acapella or are supported by Rebecca Calderon, an accompanist and teacher and graduate of the University of Western Ontario’s music program. We have since added performances for Women of Holy Blossom’s Talent Show as well as at more retirement residences, and we are delighted to be back at Holy Blossom in concert for the Dorot program in October.
