Studies show that 70% of our planet’s greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to cities. Miller looks at initiatives in four key areas – the generation of electricity, the heating and cooling of buildings, transportation, and solid waste – that have drastically reduced emissions in major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Oslo, Shenzhen, and Sydney. If cities around the world implement these proven measures, at pace and scale, Miller contends that we’ll be able to contain the rise in the earth’s temperature and mitigate our harmful emissions. DAVID MILLER is the Director of International Diplomacy and Global Ambassador of Inclusive Climate Action at C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, where he is responsible for supporting nearly 100 mayors of the world’s largest cities in their climate leadership and building a global movement for socially equitable action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. During his two terms as Mayor of Toronto from 2003 to 2010, the city became internationally known for its environmental initiatives, economic strength, and social integration. Miller is a Harvard-trained economist and professionally a lawyer.
