Lights of the Temple: Congregational Candle Lighting
Friday, December 23, 5:30 pm (Tot Shabbat) and 6:00-7:00 pm (Atrium, Kabbalat Shabbat Service)
We recognize and applaud members who have become “Lights of the Temple.” These eight “Lights of the Congregation” were chosen for their outstanding commitments to Holy Blossom Temple. The honourees will light the congregational chanukiyah on behalf of the congregation. You are warmly invited to join the candle lighting in the Atrium (and during services on Shabbat).
Lights of the Temple is generously sponsored by Judy and Sam Sapera
The 6th candle honourees are Maddie Axelrod, David Kogan, and Zephie Kogan at the Tot Shabbat Service at 5:30 pm
Maddie Axelrod has been a leader at Holy Blossom, serving on the Volunteer Engagement Committee, with the YAD program for young adults, and on the Board of Directors.
The 6th candle honourees are Naomi and Rafi Azrieli and Gerry Prendergast and Corrine Black at the Kabbalat Shabbat Service at 6:00 pm
Naomi and Rafi Azrieli have strengthened community through the support of Holy Grounds Cafe, which provides a meeting space and bite of nosh – creating opportunities for engagement at Temple. Rafiken Social Enterprises, which has partnered to run Holy Grounds Cafe, is guided by the belief that every individual is essential and has the right to participate fully in their communities, including the right to meaningful employment. Nearly 70% of the neurodiverse community in Canada is unemployed even though many of those without jobs are ready, willing and able to work. With Holy Grounds Cafe, we aim to promote social inclusion by providing our employees with a meaningful paid employment opportunity, working in a job they can be proud of. And of course, to serve you the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had!
Gerry Prendergast has served Temple in many capacities, most recently as Vice President for Worship. She organizes many aspects of the High Holy Days, ensuring that we welcome our congregation to inspiring and engaging services. She has spearheaded increasing accessibility at Temple, including supporting the Large Print Siddur Pirchei Kodesh. You’ve probably seen her on Shabbat, welcoming all to services!
Corinne Black is a leader with Women of Holy Blossom, and most recently was the WHB representative to the Board of Directors. Corinne also started the Greeter program at Temple, growing it to be a warm, welcoming presence at Temple. She has supported many initiatives and programs at Temple, growing engagement and belonging. You’ve probably seen her on Shabbat, welcoming all to services!
