For the first time in modern history, the majority of the Jews live in Israel. Yet the classic Jewish problem has not been resolved: hatred toward the Jews is on the rise around the world, and much of it is channeled and marketed through anti-Zionist and anti-Israel propaganda. Old-style, racist antisemitism has now made a marriage of convenience with a new kind of leftist-“liberal” antisemitism. Each of these two should be countered in different ways. The Jewish communities in Europe and North America need to do a lot more thinking about these, and so does Israel. For there is a huge difference between a Jewish state on the one hand and a state of the Jews on the other. The good life in Israel does not quite manage to hide the crisis of Jewish identity in Israel today.
The elections in the country (which were, to a large extent a plebiscite about Jewish nationalism) reflected to a large extent the cleavages about the Jewishness of the state, the attitudes toward the minorities and the crucial relationship with the Jews of the Diaspora.
