When was the last time you studied or read a Victorian novel? Join us as we discuss Daniel Deronda, George Eliot’s final novel and her most controversial. A portrait of society in 1876, the novel introduces us to two unforgettable characters: the beautiful and morally confused Gwendolyn Harleth, and the upright Daniel, seeking the truth of his birth and identity. With compelling themes of the strictures of womanhood (which we could call feminism), Zionism and Jewish identity, societal pressures and ethical behaviour, Daniel Deronda provides us with a challenging and satisfying read – and much to talk about!
All are welcome.
