Ellen Terry Cole, Vice President, Membership
My family joined Holy Blossom when I was two and I grew up attending religious school from Consecration to Confirmation and the n served as a student teacher and teacher for five years and then was married here by Rabbi Plaut.
I spent twelve years abroad in England and Italy studying for my PhD and eventually becoming the Head of Publications with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I even attended services at Rabbi Marmur ’ s London shul , before he came to Toronto .
But Holy Blossom was always my spiritual home . When I retuned to Canada it was always where I attended services and festival occasions with my parents , who had been great role models as members of the Temple Singers and the original Temple Players . And in 2017 I joined formally – and Cantor Beny Maissner immediately asked me to join the Temple Singers – as a tenor , like my dad – carrying on a family tradition.
I was also invited to serve on various committees – as Chair of the Communications A d visor y Group, Vice Chair of the Renewal Opening in the Atrium , and Vice Chair of the Executive Director search committee.
As I came onto the Board, I was approached to be t he VP of the Department of Administration , which seemed a natural fit , having served as the Executive Director of the Miles Nadal JCC for 13 years. Jewish community organizations have much in common. I was the Vice – President of the Department of Administration of the Board from November 2019 to 2022 and will be the Vice – President of the Department of membership from December 2022 to November 2023.
Throughout my professional life I have participated in many communications and marketing functions – at the Stratford Festival, Harbourfront Centre and TVOntario and also served on a number of arts organization Board s. But the most fulfilling was with Canadian Jewish Congress as the Regional Chair of the Ontario Community Relations Committee and eventually as National Chair. This involved outreach to a number of diver se communities working together to create common cause and developing long lasting relationships which continue t o serve and inspire to this day
