This week in Grade 1 we continued to learn about Passover and how to sing “Ma Nishtana”, with assistance from Avishai. We also learned the word נר (candle) and made candles of our own!
This week in Grade 1 we continued our discussion of Ma Nishtana and other traditions on Passover. We also enjoyed a fun baking session where we made delicious kosher for Passover cookies!
This week in Grade 1 we learned the letter מ and a fun new word: Matzah! We began to sing Ma Nishtana and also had a great visit with the Shinshinim.
This Sunday morning in grade one, parents and students spent the morning learning about Havdallah with Debbie and Lisa. After some stories, each student created their own Havdallah candle, spice jar Kiddush cup, and decorated a sheet with the blessings. We then turned the lights down, lit a Havdallah candle, and made our own Havdallah service together. Everyone used their own spices to smell, and the candle flame made cool shadows on our hands. As we welcomed the new week together, students shared with the group some things they are looking forward to in this week to come!
This week in Grade 1 we talked about how the ceremony of Havdallah incorporates all of our five senses. We drank grape juice (and learned the prayer), smelled besamim (spices), felt a Havdallah candle, saw the shadows of our hands, and heard a song.
This week in Grade 1, we discussed disabilities. We talked about what different kind of disabilities look like, and that some may not be visible. We also had a fun visit with the Shinshinim.
This week in Grade 1 we learned a new letter, כ, and some words associated with it, like “kipah” and “kelev” (dog). We also talked about how we show our Judaism to the world. And we had a visit from Avishai!
This week in grade 1 we had a special treat: one of our madrichim read the class a story and lead a discussion about it. We also did a whole bunch of review for all the hebrew letters we’ve learned so far.
This week in Grade 1 was all about Tu Bshvat. We started with a fun game about how to sort things into garbage, recycling, and compost. We also played another game to learn about how bees pollinate flowers and other plants, and we had a visit from the Shinshinim.
In Grade 1 we caught up on what everyone did over the break! Then we discussed some of the rituals around Havdallah (and sent home a family activity with discussions questions to talk about it!) and learned a new word, Yarok (green).
