As an engineer and Professor of Cancer Medicine, I’ve built programs around the world, working with government, industry and professionals. My leitmotif has been bringing together the best people to meet big challenges. My interest in governance grew out of the tainted blood crisis, where I found myself shaping a new national institution in a time of crisis. Since then, by both training and exposure, advancing that realm of leadership has become a life passion, nowhere more intimate and meaningful than at Temple.

Career information:

I am a native of Montreal, and obtained my B.Com from McGill University in 1980. I became a Chartered Accountant in 1981. My career of 30+ years includes 7 years in public practice, followed by increasingly senior positions in the pharmaceutical, broadcasting and commercial real estate development industries. Currently I consult to a variety of clients, including not-for-profit organizations and registered charities.

Cary Solomon is a real estate executive who has spent most of his thirty-year career in the development and construction industry. Mr. Solomon has been an active member of various charitable organizations including Chairman of the Technology Advisory Committee at Upper Canada College, member of the Board and Building Chairman at York Racquets Club and has served several terms as a member of the Board of Holy Blossom Temple. He has also served as an Officer, member of a Rabbinic Search Committee, and has been the Chair of the Development and Transformation Committee at Holy Blossom since 2004.

My interest and focus is always on how policy, technology and organizational changes impact the people inside an organization. I am currently the Contracts and Risk Manager, General Counsel at McNally Construction Inc. My former position was as the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for Farrow Partnership Architects Inc after having enjoyed a 20 year career as a litigation lawyer in private practice.

I have had an active involvement in the lay leadership of Holy Blossom Temple sitting on the Board and the Executive from 2008-2012.  I am the Chair of the Department of Education (2008-present) – a position whose lay leadership responsibilities encompass Adult Education, the Religious School and the Pre-School. I also sit on the Youth Engagement Visioning Committee that is partnering with the Union of Reform Judaism in its strategic initiative for the future of our children.  I am also a member of the Steering Committee and the co-chair of the development Committee of Camp George.

In my spare time, I coach rep baseball, serve on the working group that has revitalized Sibelius Square (our local Annex park) and enjoy running with my wife, Jacqueline, and playing competitive ultimate (without my wife). And, in our spare spare time, we love to travel with our three great boys (all of whom attend the Temple’s religious school and URJ camps, with our eldest having become a bar mitzvah about a year ago).

I began my association with Holy Blossom as a teen, working as a leader with youth groups. After graduating U of T, I worked in Boston as a social group worker, married and had children. I later completed an MBA after which I joined TD Bank enjoying a career as a senior finance specialist in the corporate sector in Toronto and New York and later in Personal Finance. I have continued since retirement from the bank to assist individuals and families with comprehensive financial planning and oversight. I have always enjoyed working with others to advance ideas and issues, particularly as they relate to change management.

I am a civil and commercial litigation lawyer, possessing law degrees from both a Canadian and an American law school where I graduated cum laude, and I am licensed to practice in Ontario and Michigan.

A fourth generation member of Holy Blossom Temple, I was born and raised in Toronto, and have attended Holy Blossom my entire life.  I became Bar Mitzvah at Holy Blossom, and I attended all grades of Hebrew and Religious school up to and including my confirmation.  Through Holy Blossom, I attended a UAHC camp.  I grew up attending weekly Friday night services with my father, and developed a deep and abiding connection for Judaism and Holy Blossom Temple in particular.

Relevant Experience:

As a lawyer, I have the ability to communicate openly and effectively, and engage with people of all perspectives who may have vastly diverging points of view, a skill which is necessary for the Board of Directors.  While at university, I taught Hebrew and Religious school at Congregation Sha’ar Hashomayim and Temple Beth El, in Windsor, Ontario.  Throughout my university career, I served on Faculty Boards and Committees, including serving on the Political Science Faculty Committee as the lone elected undergraduate, and on the Graduate Committee while a Masters student.  I also served on the JD/LLB Steering Committee while in Law School.  At present, I serve as an usher for High Holiday services, and as a member of Temple Brotherhood, I play on Holy Blossom’s Brotherhood baseball team.

A high school teacher by profession, I moved to Toronto from Montreal almost 35 years ago. I am a graduate of McGill University with a BA in English and a teaching degree. The last number of years have been devoted to volunteer leadership in a variety of capacities. I have served as Chair of Women’s Campaign for the UJA Federation and a member of its board. I am a past president of Temple Sinai, Toronto and the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism. I am currently serving on the oversight and board of the Union for Reform Judaism, and chaired the 71st URJ Biennial in Washington, December 2011. I also serve on the boards of Rachael’s Centre for Torah, Mussar and Ethics, the North American Council of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and others.

Career Information:

For the past 28 years I have worked as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a number of different companies and institutions – private, public and not-for-profit – generally in situations that required significant organizational change and restructuring.  During this period I have also been a member, and in several instances Chairman, of a number of Boards of Directors, again including several that oversaw not-for-profit organizations. I have also served on the Investment Committee of several Private Equity Funds.

More recently I embarked on two new career paths:  The first involves the mentoring of other CEOs and Presidents to help them achieve their business and personal goals. The second is as a mediator in situations where my business experience is relevant and where alternative dispute resolution via mediation is appropriate.

  • As a youth I attended and had my bar-mitzvah at Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue in Montreal where my family was a member for decades.  I have been a member of Holy Blossom Temple for 22 years.  Both our sons attended religious school and had their bar-mitzvahs here and for the last four years I have been a regular participant at Holy Blossom Shacharit services.

Career Information:

I began my career in marketing, working for Cott Beverages. I left there to pursue my MBA (with a major in marketing and additional focus in finance) at the J.L. Kellogg School at Northwestern University in Chicago. Upon my return to Toronto, I continued in marketing at Procter & Gamble, following a stint in business-to-business marketing at Digital 4sight, a consultancy established by Internet “guru”, Don Tapscott. In 1999, while at P&G, I began raising funds for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. By 2002, I was asked to join POGO’s staff as its chief fundraiser and grow the fundraising infrastructure and results. Today, POGO raises about $3 million annually from the private sector and, to date; we have generated well over $20 million in support.
