I have always loved the Passover Seder: the food, the socializing with family and friends, and, not least, the scope for thinking and learning about our Jewish history, customs and values.
Over the years, we have invited many others to our Seder, often Jim’s University colleagues and students who have found themselves living away from their families. They shared their own customs. We discovered common practices. We all joined in for some truly high-spirited verses of familiar melodies. And new memories were made.
Last spring we began what we hope becomes a new tradition. We responded to the Temple’s call and welcomed several from our own Holy Blossom community. This was a great opportunity to create a connection with people that we often saw at the Temple, but didn’t really know.
There are naturally some extra challenges in preparing for and welcoming new guests, but the efforts are well rewarded. As we say, “There’s always room at the table for one more as we fulfill the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim, or hospitality.”
