Chag Habanot: A Wine & Cheese Chanukah Celebration
Wednesday, December 13, 7:00 pm
When Chanukah comes to mind, images of menorah lighting, dreidel games, and the delightful tastes of latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts) often take center stage. Yet, there’s a hidden gem in the Hanukkah festivities – Eid Al Bnat (The Festival of Daughters in Judeo-Arabic) or Chag HaBanot (in Hebrew), a cherished tradition among women and girls in North Africa’s Jewish communities.
Join us for a captivating exploration of this holiday within a holiday, where we’ll uncover its rich customs. We’ll delve into the art of lighting chanukiot, harmonize with soulful songs, and unravel the remarkable tale of Yehudit/Judith, a courageous Jewish heroine. Our celebration will also include indulging in fabulous wines and cheeses, a nod to the ingenious widow who used salty cheese and wine to beguile the Greek-Syrian general Holofernes, ultimately leading to his defeat. Don’t forget your lactaid!
