Here are some photos of three generations of my family protesting on Saturday evening in Beer Sheva. The estimated number of people who came out to this demonstration is at least 8,000, maybe as many as 10,000. This is a rather conservative town of some 200,000. The speakers included Former PM Yair Lapid and Member of the Knesset and Former Head of the Reform Movement in Israel, Rabbi Gilad Kariv. Across the country, the estimate is that half a million people turned out to protest the ‘judicial coup.’
There were not a lot of placards in sight, but a huge number of Israeli flags. My daughter Jennifer told me that this was intentional; the protesters want to make clear that they are Israeli patriots who believe that the symbols of the country are not the property alone of the government or the right wing.
Shavua tov!
