The Prose and Poetry of the Prophets: Investigating and Imagining Haftarah

4 weeks, Wednesdays, May 31, June 7, June 14, June 21, 12:00 pm

Join Rabbi McCarroll for this four-part series in which we learn about the beauty and significance of Haftarah in our modern age.

We will look at Haftarah from various angles, including what Haftarah is, the beauty of its poetry, and the messages it holds for us today, based on the new release from the Central Conference of American Rabbis entitled “Prophetic Voices: Renewing and Reimagining Haftarah”.

As such, the class fee is $20 to cover the cost of ordering the book.

Classes will be held Wednesdays from 12-1 pm, on May 31, June 7, June 14, and June 21.
In-person and online options are available.

On May 31, the session will be co-taught with special guest Rabbi Barbara Symons, the editor of “Prophetic Voices: Renewing and Reimagining Haftarah”, and Rabbi at Temple David in Monroeville (near Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania.

ABOUT “PROPHETIC VOICES”
The traditional haftarah cycle read on Shabbat and holidays during the Torah service contains a wealth of prophetic wisdom, yet it is too often forgotten or ignored today. Prophetic Voices gives new life to these ancient texts. A diverse group of contributors- rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, activists, and poets- provide short commentaries on each haftarah, demonstrating their profound relevance to the present. Moreover, the volume boldly invites us to rethink the haftarah canon. Going beyond the Prophets, it presents alternative readings from Jewish texts biblical to contemporary. New haftarot for each Shabbat and holiday are included, plus haftarot for the Jewish American calendar, from Yom HaShoah to Pride Month to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The readings are enhanced by scholarly essays placing the Prophets in a historical context and examining the role of prophecy in Reform Judaism. Prophetic Voices summons us to listen, study, think, and teach–as well as to sing, pray, and march.
