This Sunday: Remembering Post-Holocaust Theologian, Rabbi Emil Fackenheim on the occasion of his Tenth Yahrtzeit.

Best known for “The 614th Commandment,” Fackenheim courageously asked how the Holocaust changes the relationship between God and the Jewish People.

Rabbi-Professor Michael Morgan, Fackenheim’s most trusted student, will share excerpts from his new book dedicated to Fackenheim’s 60 years of Jewish Thought. We are especially pleased that Rabbi Fackenheim’s daughter, Suzy, will also be with us to mark the tenth Yahrtzeit.

  • 9 a.m. Shacharit & Kaddish
  • 9:30 a.m. Brotherhood Breakfast with Professor Morgan
  • Remembering Rabbi Fackenheim and his Teachings
  • Books for Sale and Signing

This event is proudly offered in partnership by The Centre for Jewish Studies at The University of Toronto, The Temple Brotherhood, and The Schwartz Reisman Centre for Adult Jewish Learning at Holy Blossom Temple.

When my uncle, Dr. Sam Birenbaum, found out that I was going to study at Hebrew University, he gave me just one piece of advice: “Find Fackenheim”. I was honored to take one of his classes dedicated to the 614th commandment when I was there and it has indeed shaped my thinking ever since.

I met Rabbi Fackenheim in the mid 1970’s when he gave a lecture at Queen’s and I was studying religion. It was a formative event in my academic life and an awakening for me. Thank G* He gave us Rabbi Fackenheim.

I also had the privilege of learning from Rabbi Fackenheim at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Many people here at Holy Blossom Temple remember studying theology with Rabbi Fackenheim when they were sixteen years old in Confirmation Class. Anyone out there with memories to share?
