The Struggle for Mastery in the Middle East.
The tumultuous regime chances in the Middle East during the past year have created some new realities and rivalries, and they have also restored some old ones.
The Arab world as such has lost most of its clout, with its leader, Egypt, neutralized in regional leadership affairs, while non-Arab countries such as Turkey and Iran have become more dominant. The old Israeli-Turkish alliance has been replaced by the strong Israeli ties with Cyprus, Greece and other countries in the Balkans.
Iran and its rivals have been conducting a heated rivalry in Central Asia.
Russia, in alliance with China, has resurfaced a major regional actor, at the expense of declining US influence in the area.
