As is our custom at this time, our Music Committee and I are thrilled to announce our Musical Heritage Concert Series for the coming season.

Keeping with our tradition we have kept the themes and the events of our concerts in sync and harmony with our mission statement, namely the promotion of Jewish art and in particular the awareness of Jewish music.

I have tried to keep the content and venues both exciting as well as somewhat personal. I am honoured to be able to attract international stars to our Temple through the variety of our scheduled concerts. I hope you will share with me your interest in these magnificent programs and join us at these events. I know it will enrich your cultural and spiritual lives.

These concerts are designed to serve, strengthen and build a stronger community here at Holy Blossom Temple. Help us to create lasting, musical memories.

Srul Irving Glick Memorial Concert

Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 8 p.m.

This year we marks the tenth anniversary of Srul Irving Glick’s untimely death. We honour his memory in this unique concert. Srul Glick z’l was a dear friend, mentor and a great influence on my own musical development as a Hazzan and musician. Since my arrival in Toronto over thirty years ago, I have had the privilege of performing his Cantorial, choral and instrumental music. Our own musical worship repertoire at Temple includes many of his sweet, warm and sensitive compositions.

Srul Glick’s music has been performed all over the world on major stages and was featured at the Vatican. Srul received the Order of Canada and is considered one of Canada’s major composers.

This concert will feature both contemporary and liturgical music of this acclaimed composer as well as:

  • Holy Blossom Temple Choir
  • Holy Blossom Temple Singers
  • Lachan Jewish Chamber Choir
  • Beth Tikvah Choir
  • Hazzanim Benjamin Maissner, Tibor Kovari and Efraim Sapir

National Yiddish Theatre’s Soul to Soul: Yiddish and African-American Musical Celebration

Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 8 p.m.

From the power of song to overcome persecution to the celebration of life through spiritual music, the African-American and Jewish people have many shared traditions. In the spirit of unity, we honour Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Paul Robeson, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway and countless others who pioneered integration and cultural exchange.

This concert was conceived by Zalmen Mlotek, the Director of the National Yiddish Theatre. Zalmen has appeared time and again at the Toronto Ashkenaz Festival and is an expert of Yiddish culture and song. Among the stars: Elmore James, a veteran of five Broadway productions and numerous opera stages around the world; Tony Perry, a commanding singer-actor and Hazzan Magda Fishman, cabaret singer and stage singer extraordinaire. This concert is part of Jewish Music Week in Toronto.
