“Jews” or perhaps more elaborately, the “Children of Israel” have maintained their own distinct society for over 3000 years, a feat few other groups have endured. They have done so in the face of very real challenges, which if left unanswered could have brought the complete enterprise to an end.
In the early history, the adversaries were other peoples, engaged in the same geographic and political dynamic that yet haunts the Promised Lands of the Torah. Political setbacks were answered with a theology that could explain the inexplicable.
In the coming weeks we will explore this theme and look at various examples of threat and survival with a view to gaining an understanding into what Judaism, or more precisely what has been done to Judaism, to overcome.
