Every January members of the Toronto’s Jewish Education community travels to Israel to choose Shinshinim for the next School Year under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto and the Jewish Agency in Israel. Over 2,000 candidates applied for “Shnat Sherut – a year of service” after graduation from high School and prior to their army service. Collectively the Torontonians saw 50 candidates and ae ultimately bringing 25 wonderful young Israelis to Toronto beginning August 2017. Debbie Spiegel along with our lay leader Gillian Helfield, and Leo Baeck partner, Hillel Kurlandsky made up our team for the selection process.
We welcome Ido Mordechay and Noa Gordon to our Holy Blossom/Leo Baeck South community. Ido is from Haifa, studying chemistry and history. He is currently doing a research project on the coexistence of Jews and Arabs in Haifa during the British Mandate. Ido is proud to live in a city which is known for its atmosphere of co-existence between Arabs and Jews.
Noa Gordon is from Kfar Adar, a small town outside of Jerusalem. Noa is studying chemistry and Bible studies – two very different majors, but is interested in both ends of the spectrum, learning about science and how things are made, and also about the stories in our Bible, and what we can learn from these important experiences.
This is just a short preview – we look forward to welcoming them this coming August. As always, we are looking for host families for them. If you have room in your home and your heart for either of these terrific young people, please contact Debbie Spiegel, [email protected]
